You know how it is when you decide to sign up for a newsletter, or subscribe to something and the next thing you know you're being flooded with emails? Me too! I've decided to re-adjust from Tip of the Day to Tip of the Week so it's easier for you to stay in touch and not get overwhelmed with the number of beginner blog postings. In fact, it may even end up as two or three tips a month, in addition to keeping you up to date with breaking news. On that note, the next tip will be posting on Monday, October 3rd.

Today's tip is about taking a break from it all, including the computer. I'll be coming and going over the next few days but my office is staying out of bounds during some relaxation time and a "brain break." A camera and a good book are in order...how about you?

Is it raining today, where you live? Instead of thinking, "oh darn, it's not a great picture day" why not head outside and see what you can see? In other words, go exploring for interesting raindrops, wet rocks, reflections in puddles and anything you can think of. And... subjects like flowers can be great because the cloud will be preventing extremes of brightness and shadow caused by bright sunlight.

Sept. 20th Tip of the Day; exposure lock button part two.

If, for example, you are attempting to take a picture of your subject beside a window you may have already discovered that the light from the window can affect your exposure, especially in the auto mode.
Next time this happens practice this, although you may need to modify instructions slightly according to your particular camera model: move in closer to your subject and focus on the main area of interest. Press the shutter release half way to auto focus, then, at the same time press the AE-L (auto exposure lock) button. Still holding the button and shutter release move backwards to recompose your subject and take the picture.
What you can expect to happen is that with the "locking" of the exposure the camera did not re-adjust when you moved back to re-compose, thereby giving you the proper exposure for your main subject.

Your owner's manual will help you locate and instruct on how to use for your particular camera model. Tomorrow's tip - suggestions for use.

Sept. 18th Tip of the day; buying a camera.

When looking at the features and benefits of different camera models it can be over-whelming to make a choice. One of the tips I continually pass on, in addition to visiting a reputable camera shop is to HOLD THEM. In other words, ask to look at different models and hold them as if you were taking photos. How does it feel in your hand: too big, too small, a bit heavy? Do the buttons and dials seem to be in a convenient location, as well as the on/off control?
Remember, if you're going to be packing your camera for a full day of shooting you want it to be comfortable and feel right for you. New website page coming soon...Tips for Buying a Camera.

Sept. 16th Tip of the day; grey sky photography..

You know there are bound to be days when you want to be out taking pictures but the whitish/grey sky isn't helping. In situations like this practice placing the sky, at most, in the top one third of your picture. You can also use this "diffused" (softer) light to your advantage for close-ups of just about any subject, thereby eliminating the sky completely. In fact, why not observe a subject on a day like this and then compare the look when bright mid-day sun is falling on it. Do you see both bright highlights and dark shadows? Quite likely and "ouch" tough to make the subject look great in that kind of blazing brightness.

Have you recently purchased a new memory card or camera? If so you're going to want to know about "formatting your memory card." In a nutshell formatting: A) prepares a card for use in your camera and B) helps to keep your card "healthy" by cleaning off picture file information residue which can hang around if you only delete images. PLEASE NOTE: FORMATTING WILL ERASE YOUR IMAGES so make sure you have them backed up to other sources before you remove them from your memory card.
Make it a fun photo day!
